The story of Gian takes place in Sils-Maria over 100 years ago, when the Hotel Waldhaus was opened. The idea came from an old photograph showing the herd of goats in Sils and the reference to the fact that the shepherd caught vipers to supplement his pocket money.

The book contains two versions of the story, a male (“Gian”) and a female (“Gianna”). In the female version the girl plays the role of the brave goat herder and the boy is the needy vacation child Karl.
